Inside Scientology: The Story Of America's Most Secretive Religion (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

All I can say is OMG! And I am almost compelled to do some research to find out what it is that could compel people to endure the abuse. I have also wondered what illicit drugs do but have managed to steer clear of those as well. Nearing the end of the book I had the feeling that there was a comparison between Scientology and a third world country. Those at the top keep a level of control by limiting education and knowledge as well as information. Keeping a degree of control through dependence. Maybe that is just one of my many previous lives speaking. I really wanted to give this five stars as I enjoyed it more than just about any nonfiction book in recent memory, but I have a complaint. She makes a point, multiple times, of how she got this unprecedented access to the inner workings of the church and she got to talk to all these people that Scientologists never let talk to the press and got to tour all of these places. That's really not in this book. Many MANY times she gave one side, the ex-Scientologist's side in a very personal way, quoting the person making the claim directly, but it never sounded like she talked to many people currently within Scientology. At best, she would quote what a spokesperson told a newspaper or an EX-Scientologist talking about how they felt at the time. I never really got what her unprecedented access amounted to. She gives a personal description of like two sessions with Scientologists that anybody off the street could get, then two very public-sounding events. We never really get the sense that she even met any current church officials, beyond that she said she did. I liked this book a lot and did learn about Scientology from it, but it's more like "Outside Scientology" because that's the perspective it gives.
