Investigating The Hottie (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Younger YA book about a girl who gets brought into a spy agency by her Aunt and is given her first assignment.Got this for my daughter but I wanted to read first since she is in middle school and I wanted to make sure it was appropriate. It has a pretty fantastic premise but one I think works for a younger teen audience. You have to suspend you disbelief but I think that I would have enjoyed it when I was that age. My only complaint is the ending. **spoilers**I think the ending would have worked better if this was going to be a series. We suspend our disbelief on the girl being a spy and pretty much everything else but then at the end it fades out with a dose of reality. As she flies away from the guy that we've been rooting for her to get with she realizes that they'll likely end up just as friends because of the distance. Everything else in the book has been pretty fantastical so it was weird to get a dose of reality only with the way the relationship will likely end.If this was going to be a series it would have worked better. In the end there really is no closure for anybody, her aunt and her partner, Will and his grandmother or even what the main character ends up doing. I think this book had the potential to be the beginning of a cute series for a slightly younger audience but it fizzled out instead. Fifteen-year old Amanda is visiting her aunt when she drops a bomb on her - she's a spy, she's been secretly under spy training this whole time and she is being activated for a mission. Investigating the Hottie is a fun teenage-spy story. Sure, the circumstances behind Amanda's becoming a spy were a little perfunctory and the actual investigating took a back seat to romance, but the story kept a nice pace throughout. My favorite parts were Aunt Christie and her partner Nic's banter. I loved those two and think they deserve their own book.
