Laura Restrepo's LA ISLA DE LA PASION is very hard to put down, as it is an excellent novel. In the early 1900's, a Mexican soldier by the name of Ramon Arnaud is stationed at a tiny island in the Pacific, south of Acapulco. He moves there with his wife and a few other people. For all practical purposes, these people are stranded there, while life in Mexico goes on. The Porfirio Díaz dictatorship falls, a civil war breaks, and the country is torn apart by revolution. LA ISLA DE LA PASION is a story of exile, with all its connotations, including the dream of returning. Sickness, insanity and the force of nature play major roles in the novel. Restrepo also exposes the reader to feelings such as true friendship, love, and loyalty. Restrepo narrates the story almost 70 years after it actually happened, basically by contacting descendants of those involved. From the perspective of form, the novel is very well written and easy to read, even as Restrepo jumps from past to present and also from city to city. The plot is very interesting and the reader will always find himself wondering what will happen next and reading just a bit further before putting the book down. The characters in the story are extremely well developed and you will end up understanding them, their feelings, dreams, scale of values, and fears. Apart from being basically a tragic character, Ramon Arnaud borders with being a caricaturesque and comical typical Mexican. Even though in esence this is a sad story, there is also always a shadow of hope of returning home. Restrepo also throws in a few elements of magical realism, which adds to the delight of reading this book. The only flaws I found were a series of typical Colombian expressions (Restrepo is Colombian), which Mexicans do not use or even understand, being said by the characters. Overall, LA ISLA DE LA PASION is an excellent novel, even though in my opinion it does not reach the heights of Restrepo's DELIRIO.
Una novela impactante en el tema y en lo que cuenta, aunque la forma de contarlo en ocasiones lo suaviza. Unos hechos tremendamente duros que, sinceramente, no sé cómo no acabaron todos totalmente locos en esa soledad y aislamiento Me ha gustado cómo ha hilado la historia, intercalando capítulos centrados en la isla y en los personajes principales, con otros de la actualidad, de sus descendientes, con informes oficiales (aunque estén narrados). Y el estilo narrativo, ligero, algo sarcástico a veces, melodioso, que hace que los hechos tan terribles que cuenta se suavicen un poco por ciertos comentarios que rozan el absurdo.Ha sido todo un descubrimiento, de la historia y de la escritora, de la que leeré algo más seguro.
What do You think about Isle Of Passion (2005)?
I was totally fascinated by this true story of a group of Mexican colonists barely surviving on a tiny atoll in the pacific for years. They go there initially to man a military base on this island, but the Mexican government strands them there when it gets caught up in civil war in the 19-teens. By the end, there are only women and children left alive. It's totally gruesome and gripping.

Basada en una historia verdadera, cuenta la historia de una mujer mexicana que que va al islote Clipperton con su esposo que es oficial del ejército y tiene el puesto de gobernador de la isla. A causa de la Revolución Mexicana los barcos que deben suministrar a los habitantes de la isla, tardan más de lo que deben y al fin paran de llegar. A pesar de la falta de alimentos, enfermedades, y muerte, esta mujer muestra una capacidad increíble por la supervivencia. Me fascina el cambio de punto de vista. Vemos las investigaciones sobre la tragedia en la actualidad y también vemos los acontecimientos desde el punto de vista de los que fueron a Clipperton al principio del S. XX. Aunque se trata del ejército y la revolución, se enfoca en el papel de las mujeres.

Buena historia de unas familias mexicanas que vivían en una isla del Pacífico, en medio de una disputa territorial. Bien documentada. Hace saltos en el tiempo del presente al pasado. Se entrevista con los sobrevivientes del relato, busca las reliquias del pasado. La autora va hilvanando una historia novelada, recreando los escenarios y los probables acontecimientos que ocurrieron en esa isla, lo que ocurrió con esas familias que quedaron a la deriva debido a que se fueron en un muy mal momento (en medio de la Revolución Mexicana y la Primera Guerra Mundial). Me sorprendió la fortaleza de las mujeres. También me sorprendió que para los niños esa fue la mejor etapa de su vida.
