Itatte Meikai Na Satsujin (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
Astonishing novel especially for a first ever. I was hooked from the very beginning I still cannot get over how attracted to the book I was. A nice play on words and very few chapters had my mind drifting. I loved how it all worked out. A bit bummed about the ending but all in all this is an outstanding read. I felt intense emotion throughout but thats probably because Im a 15 year old girl who cannot wait to read the world of adult novels. "A Very Simple Crime" is aptly titled, as this is a very simply plotted book. My quibbles with the novel are more structural and basic, rather than about the plot per se.First, the characters are superficial. I never really felt like I knew them, despite learning important points of their backstories. The characters simply read like characters, rather than real people to care about. Second, the last name of two primary characters is Lee (brothers Adam and Monty). The first name of a third major character is Leo. I personally feel that characters should be easily distinguishable by their names. Names that are too similar, either in spelling or pronunciation, undermines the reader's ability to differentiate characters, which is especially important when none of the characters are particularly "deep" or complex (see first point above).Third, the chapters, especially in the first half of the book, are incredibly short. While this gives some quick pacing to the plot, it also chops up the flow and rhythm of the writing, making a bit challenging to get into (not useful if you intend to set the book down for a day or two in between readings).Final, the author switches between the first person point-of-view (Adam Lee) into third person. Initially, the switch occurs at definitive breaks in the novel (each part a change in POV). But this clear delineation breaks down in the second half of the novel and POV changes either chapter to chapter or within a chapter. Now, I freely admit that changes POV within a single novel can be one of my literary pet peeves. Doing it without a clear and defined structure throughout the entire book is frustrating to this reader, mainly because it doesn't serve to advance the plot. It's a writing device for the sake of having a writing device.
