Žive Lutke : Povratak Seksizma (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This was a great book, putting into words things I think but can't articulate. Sexism is rife and femininity is increasingly narrowly defined which is very detrimental to society as a whole and obviously women in particular. She busted the myth of women gaining 'empowerment' by working in the sex industries or even by promiscuity - she talked of the increasingly dangers of the porn industry how it can be damaging to men and women alike. I kept thinking about J when I read this book but I have to disseminate it's ideas to her and Luke and my students - especially in the representation of women. It also discussed 'the new biological determinism' and how it is widely reported in the media - especially when it shows gender difference. But Natasha points to many studies that show no difference, that are not picked up as much. she also busted the myths about those biological differences and talks up the role of gender inequality and socialisation have to play in maintaining gender imbalance. Finally she told us about 10 new movements that are paying attention and trying to combat the new sexism - It made me realise that I am too unengaged and should work on a few causes and some of these are well worth while - Loved it. It didn't really introduce many new feminism concepts to me, like self-objectification and trying to live up to a Sex and the City promiscuous culture, but it did give me some ammunition in my argument with my significant other about the wage disparity between men and women. His argument is that women choose to have babies and therefore willingly sacrifice their careers in order to have to children. This book brought up some interesting and infuriating statistics that women are seen as less competent in the workforce even when they're equal or better than men and they pick up the slack at home while men work the long hours to get the job promotions and raises (women do 23 hours of domestic work each week while working a full-time job while men do 8 hours of domestic work). Overall, this book is well-written and important for a lot of people to read and I would recommend it to anyone who's new to modern feminism.

Natasha Walter and I pretty much agree on everything - she's my kind of feminist.
