They were sitting in a big black SUV and wore dark sunglasses. One was pretending to read the newspaper and the other was pretending to be on his phone. I stepped back from the window and sighed, collapsing back onto my bed. Colin had been gone for a few hours, and although I felt pretty safe with the muscle sitting out front, I wanted him to come back. Things were all mixed up and weird, but for some reason he made it easier to handle. Even if he was a huge asshole, and even if I was only a distraction to him, I still felt better when he was in the house. Nothing was worse than being trapped in my dad’s place. Frustrated, I got up and went to the window again. I looked out at the city, or at least at my dad’s block, and watched people walk by. It was amazing the sheer number of different people that moved through the streets on a given day. And the number of cars. There was never any parking. Then I noticed: the black SUV that had been guarding the house was gone. There was a big gap where it had been.
