Jesus Freaks: Sins Of The Father (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

4.5 Stars! Not a Jesus Freak? Doesn't matter! Jesus Freak? You should read this, too! This book takes you to school...Carter University, one of the leading Christian conservative colleges, to be exact. The catch is, you ride along with the illegitimate daughter of a high profile pastor. Let me not forget her mother has been a strong part of Planned Parenthood and other women's rights and gay rights organizations and events. This book gives you a broad view, and to the humble, it may highly affect your judgments of those not on the same side of the fence you're on - no matter which side that is. When was the last time you read a really great book...one that moved you, challenged your beliefs and made you feel so consumed by it that you could hardly stand to stop reading it? Well I just finished such a book and ME...little Ms. "no book is dirty, dark or sexy enough for me" absolutely fell in love with a book that has NO sex in it, minimal dirty words and yet was in my opinion, one of the best books I have ever read. THAT is saying a lot. I am not going to re-hash the story or pick it apart...plenty of other reviewers have already done that and you can read all about what the book is about by reading the blurbs and synopsis...what I am going to do is tell you what this book means to me.Religion is a very touchy subject for me...raised in an Orthodox home, spent my whole childhood attending services that were very ritualistic, sang in the church choir (my grandfather and 4 uncles were all priests), walked away from the church for personal reasons (corrupt clergy, condemnation of people that I loved)...and to this day only step foot in them for weddings, funerals or meetings.A quote from this book stuck with me and is one of the reasons I have had a hard time with organized religion: "Where these kids...when do they go from those nice kids we sat with at lunch to adults who use the Bible to oppress people instead of love them?"Kennedy tried very hard to come to an understanding of her faith, her place in the world with a birth-father who is like a rockstar pastor in the church and someone who is worshipped by the students at her Christian University. SO many issues are touched on in this book that it really makes you think hard about your own feelings about life, love, religion, family and above all faith.Being "saved" has two meanings in this story...question is do you NEED "saving" into the Kingdom of Heaven or do you need to "be saved" from the Jesus freaks?Whether you are a believer or just a spiritual person who does not believe in God or the Bible...this was such an amazing book and I highly recommend it!***** 5 ***** "Jesus Freaks will never mean the same thing to me again" stars
