This book is great for someone who wants to read an introduction to the New Testament without the feel of taking a standard college course in the field. Ehrman does line out some very intriguing contradictions, but none of them are really surprising. It is nice, however, to get reminded of these things and that is what this book accomplishes without a doubt.The most interesting part of this book is actually Ehrman's explanation of the several Christian groups that branched out and how they originated. He covers everything from the proto-orthodox Christians to the Gnostics and then shows which group eventually triumphed in the fourth century CE and why. Absolutely fascinating.It is worth pointing out that Ehrman's writing style is very pleasant and unproblematic, which is what he is mostly known for among his fellow scholars. The only reason why this is not getting five stars is because it sometimes felt like I was reading two different books about different subjects. The content itself was definitely worth five stars, though. Wow, this was a excellent book. I was raised as a Missouri synod Lutheran. Many of the comparisons and contradictions I found fascinating. I thought the last chapter tied things together nicely and was happy to see the author unapologetically laying out his feelings and how he had come to them about his personal religious path.I must admit, this book has deepened the gap between myself and Christianity. The Bible is a human book and more importantly written and edited by humans.
