Just Being Audrey (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Date: September 7th, 2014Author: Margaret Cardillo; Illustrations by Julia DenosTitle: Just Being Audrey Plot: Margaret Cardillo's children book focuses on the life of Audrey when her family hid from the Nazis in World War II, when she became a iconic fashion and movie star and when she became the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.Setting: Various locations in Europe; New York City, New YorkCharacters: Audrey Hepburn, Colette, William WylerPoint-of View: Third-Person Theme: Being Down-to-Earth; HumblenessStyle: Third-Person; Biography; Colorful illustrations (reminds me of designer-style illustrations)Copyright: 2011Notes: I loved this book. When I saw this book in the library, I thought right away that this would be appealing to girls especially Audrey Hepburn fans. I like that the book focuses on parts on her life that isn't discussed as frequently as her fashion choices such as her life during World War II and her involvement with organizations that focused on helping children. A fun read! Personally I didn't know much about Audrey Hepburn before I read this book. After reading this book however, I now know more than most people probably do about her. The author does a good job of capturing who she was through the language used and many views of her famous looks. But the author also does a good job of informing readers that Audrey was more than her trending looks and what seemed like a glamorous life of acting. Readers are introduced to Hepburn's early life; her homely looks, her love for dancing, and her time of hiding during World War 2. Overall, I feel this book provided an interesting perspective of Audrey's life and makes her success and world work even more impressive to me.
