This was quite a difficult book to rate as the heartbreaking story of the Somalian war is depicted through the stories of 3 very different characters whose paths cross at at event in the first chapter. The daily struggles of Somalian life and the impact of the conflict is viewed through the eyes of a 10 year old refugee, female soldier and elderly woman. The chapters are split to the lives of each. Although touching I found the book quite tedious and felt detached from the suffering and characters portrayed. All in all an okay read but certainly not riveting or a page turner which is a shame. This is a beautifully written book about 3 woman during the Somalian civil war in the 80's. One is a orphan, one an old woman and one a middle aged soldier. The writing vividly brings the beautiful land and the tragic time to life and carries the reader through tragedy, beauty, memories, heartbreak and brutality. It also shows how women were marginalized in Somalia during that time period. As the story unfolds it is clear that the three woan have much more in common with eachother than ever imagined; their humanity.
What do You think about Kadotettujen Hedelmätarha (2014)?
lots of good things including characters but way too grim to not be glad when it was over.
