Ketchup Clouds (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Very rarely do I give a book 5 stars, but this one was outstanding! Zoe lives in Britain and confesses to killing someone through a series of letters to a man named Stuart on death row. Zoe hides her identity by using a false name, but reveals the events that led up to the terrible murder. The story goes in multiple directions and the outcome is completely surprising. Zoe is a likable character and one that I feel many adolescent girls would be able to relate with. The plot moves quickly and the chapters are the perfect length. I can't recommend this book enough. There are a couple of "sexual scenes" described, so it would be better suited to a more mature adolescent audience. More like a 3.5.. I picked this up because it's such unique premise and I was intrigued. It took me 100 pages to get into it, it seemed to drag on at certain points. A teenager in love with two brothers? Not my cup of tea. But, like I said, I liked the idea of letters written to an inmate on death row. Zoe, our main character, feels she actually has something in common with him. Her, Zoe's, ideas of this persons crime and reasoning are far fetched but it go with her story and her feelings over the "events."I really enjoyed the family dynamic. Even though it seemed like a lot of stories to properly balance. Someone in another review described them as watered down because there was just too many, and that's the perfect description. You don't get down to the core of anyones issues (mainly the parents) but you get enough information to satisfy the need to know for all the arguing. The last 70 pages, specifically the last two "letters", were what really made me bump it up a star and a half. Without spoilers, it doesn't end like what you might expect and I quite like that.
