In Kiss of the Vampire Cynthia Garner introduces her imaginative and sexy take on paranormal CSI. Her preternaturals (vampires, werewolves, demons) are exiles from another dimension who have to make their way in the world.Half-human, half-demon Nix has an especially hard time, and things don't get any easier when the vampire who jilted her, the only guy to really get under her skin, becomes her partner and makes it clear exactly what's NOT going to happen between them.Kiss of the Vampire is a great read, full of sexual tension and imaginative world building. Nix is tough and competent (never whiny!) and Tobias is so hot at times I think my pages steamed. Can't wait to get the next in the series! Half-demon Nix de la Fuente works as a liaison between the region’s Council of Preternaturals and local authorities when it comes to crimes that might involves humans and/or demons. When viscious murders on vampires rise to the surface, Nix is forced to work together with her ex-lover, vampire Tobias Caine---------------As the first book of a series, this one is pretty good. I like the idea regarding the origins of the preternaturals. The Prets are Extra-Dimensional (ED) beings who take possession of a human. It is the combination of their otherworldly and the human host that determines whether the EDs become vampires or shifters or such. It's a different take on the supernatural myths. I like both the hero and heroine. Since this is paranormal romance (rather than urban fantasy), the romance is quite present -- HOWEVER, they are not spending their times mooning for each other or thinking about how sexy the other one is. They still make progress regarding the investigation, even if the whole time, Tobias and Nix are fighting over the left-over feeling for the other.Tobias left Nix five years before because he thought it would be the best to keep Nix's humanity intact since Nix seemed to have problems to control her demon when they were together. Even so, they clearly still feelings for the other -- and it's fun to read how they deal with it. The story is not without niggle, of course. There is one scene that makes me roll my eyes -- Tobias and Nix have sex while there's pressing deadline in finding the clues, I mean, really, guys?! Not the time!! -- and the number of terms of endearment is quite excessive (we have 22 "honey's" and "sweetheart's" for the whole book!). Also, there are times that I think either Tobias or Nix are slightly too naive to not guess that the Council must have knowledge regarding the murders. However, I still think the story combines the romance and the mystery just nicely. I don't know whether the same arc will be part of the sequel, but I can't wait to read it. Especially because it is about Nix's human partner, Detective Dante MacMillan. He's so charming in this book, sometimes providing the humor with his easy attitude and sense of camaderie with Nix (which annoys Tobias to no end :p)
