La Bellezza Delle Cose Fragili (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This is a beautifully written book, but slow to read due to the rhythmic language and use of meter. Some sections were so lyrical I found that I wasn't absorbing the words and had to go back and re-read them to register what was being said and this made it slow-going. There were certainly times when I came close to giving up, but it is also one of those books that compels you to persevere and I am glad that I did. It was almost musical in places and in retrospect, I wonder if it would be best read aloud to appreciate the rhythms and absorb the words.The story is a jigsaw of a broken family, with each piece building the picture which comes together at the end. It is a story of hopes, dreams, challenges, injustices, ambitions (some thwarted, some given up, some realised), tensions, love, politics and more. Well worth a read - and some perserverance! There are elements of this book that are beautiful, but would be more suited to poetry than a novel. I am not a fan of the historic past tense and find its constant use in this novel wearing. When used to excess it loses impact and becomes a distraction. Too much detail at the expense of narrative progress and interest. If I had not been obliged to read it (for a reading group) I would have given up. Thanks also to other reviewers here who gave me hope I might grow to like it, so gave me the strength to keep going. It simply didn't do it for me.
