La Canción De Los Maoríes (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

This review is from: Song of the Spirits (In the Land of the Long White Cloud saga) (Kindle Edition) I loved the first book "In the Land of the Long White Cloud", but in this book, "Song of the Spirits", I felt that the characters from "Clouds" actually over-shadowed the characters in "Song".I had just finished "Clouds" when I started "Song", but still had a hard time trying to figure out who all the characters were and that was distracting. Maybe it would have helped if the author had drawn in a family tree in the beginning, so those of us without great memories could enjoy the book better.I'm not into explicit sex scenes in books, but in this one, we were told of the punishment Elaine received, but had no idea what was actually happening to make her so afraid of her husband. This book and "Clouds" were both books of over 700 pages, and were perfect for a long winter weekend.I would definitely read Sarah Lark again, but hope she doesn't continue the series. I was disappointed in the book. I thought it would be a historical novel about New Zealand, but it turned out to be a story of two girls/women from an extended family. The story could have been set on any continent, and, except for a few details, in any period. It definitely was from a time when women were secondary to men, and the women seemed to accept that. The time specified by the story was the late 1800s.I actually read through (not read) the entire story, picking up the main plotlines (I felt), skipping over pages at a time that didn't seem to enhance the story for me. The story first jarred me on what looks like page 3 in my Kindle edition. I made this comment: "Draw him out of his shell? His previous actions certainly indicate no shell. This is the author's cheap shot contrivance to describe flirtation." Oh dear.I won't jot down any of my other notes. I know a number of people enjoyed this story and enjoy this kind of writing. Anything else I would say would be like going into someone else's house and demeaning it because it wasn't the kind of house I liked. That's not a good thing to do, either for me or for the other person. However, as I wrote earlier, I actually read through the story. I thought the overall plot was clear and had potential. I could actually have diagramed it when I was through, and I could have drawn up character sketches for each of the main players. The characters weren't uninteresting. It just wasn't my type of book, and I thought the narrator (the author) jumped to too many quick, cliched conclusions.I do appreciate the author's explanations at the end of the book, telling why she felt it would have been too difficult and perhaps upsetting to descendants of the settlers of New Zealand had she chosen to write a standard "historical novel" account of New Zealand in the 1890s. And now, because of this book, I'm a little more interested in reading a more historical account of the settling of New Zealand. This was a Kindle book of the day ...

Una historia muy bonita, aunque un libro excesivamente largo!! La recomiendo!! ;)
