La Notte Ha Cambiato Rumore (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
The is a novel that needed a lot of editing - it was so slow and so boring in places. I am giving nothing away in noting that it's about a women who becomes a spy in Madrid during WW2. One can easily get this info from the book flap. This book is 609 pages long and she doesn't become a spy until after page 400! And even then, until the last mission described in the book - her spy activities are tedious and there is no sense of danger or excitement - which I suspect is really normal for most spy activities but it doesn't make for good reading. As for editing - a perfect example is when she meets her ex-fiance in Madrid. That was about 15 pages that added nothing to the story, the characters, or the reader. Losing those pages would have been a perfect editor's choice. There are lots of examples like that. Another thing that bugged me was the author's over-dramatic endings. After awhile they just become funny. For example: here are the endings of three chapters in a row...1. "But nothing was ever the same again."2. "And from then on, the situation changed radically, for everyone."3. "And over that time, things happened that - yet again- transformed the course of my life forever."Really??? Can't you just hear the 'dum dum dum DUMMMMM!' after each ending. Like these next two examples:1. "When she returned she had someone on her arm, and I knew at once that the course of the night had changed." 'dum dum dum DUMMMM!" 2."It wasn't till we arrived at our seats that I realized that by attending that apparently innocent event, I'd just stepped of my one free will directly into the very jaws of the wolf." "dum dum dum DUMMMM!"A friend recommended this book - I think while we have the same taste in mysteries and thrillers - we have very different taste in fiction.
What do You think about La Notte Ha Cambiato Rumore (2009)?

The title I read was The Time In between. Same story.
