A nice book with a very slow build up. I argue with the perception that this is a true horror novel. Yes, at the very end we get some sort of horror elements, but until then it really is a study into the mindset of one character and how she desperately tries to keep herself together, and how she slowly unwinds. Very psychological this novel is very good but nothing you expect it to be. Horror it is not. This book has the feel of a lot of the haunting horror of the '70s, a new take on the architecture-as-gateway-to-Hell theme. Sarah Langan's skills at character development are on display again, but this time the setting is a big city rather than a small town, and the focus is squarely on the protagonist.Personally I like her first two books better, but it is interesting to see a change of pace. My only complaint, much as in the other books, is that there are a lot of editing mishaps that are so bad as to be distracting. Is bad editing a sign of our Times, with too much reliance on spell-check?Oh well. Still a great horror novel, and I hope Ms. Langan isn't finished yet.
