Arg. This book. 99 percent of it was really well done, but I think Chase fumbled it a bit at the end. I loved Lisle and Olivia together, I really, really did, but Chase never removed the main stumbling block between them (the whole Egypt dilemma). I guess I'm supposed to believe that their love for each other magically solves all problems, but I just can't do it. I wanted them to sort it all out and find a way for them both to be happy with the solution, but I feel like Chase avoided solving the problem altogether in favor of a quick and easy happily ever after. So since I liked the story so much for the majority of the book, I gave it 4 stars, but I'm still a little disappointed about the ending. An enjoyable read but not as engaging as her previous books in the series. This is the story of a childhood friendship evolving into passionate love with an old crumbling Scottish castle and ghosties thrown in for good measure. Plus a bit of Scots history and the political tensions between the English and the Scots. Unusual for an LC book there is a glaring continuity mistake from 'Lord Perfect'. At the end of that book Bathsheba and Olivia gain wealth through discovered treasure whereas in the opening of this book its said that they inherited wealth from Olivia's father on his death. And a personal quibble - not once through the book does the heroine call the hero by his given name Peregrine, but always by his title Lisle. Odd for a childhood friend and later lover.
