Land Des Todes (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

As part of a task in school I chose this book out of a variety of choices. As soon as I began to read this I knew it would be a challenge as it made me feel uncomfortable and have difficulty understanding what the plot was due to the wide range of vocabulary used. This book also confused me with the different characters and the story being told from each of their perspectives. I found that as soon as I understood one character and what was happening to them, it would change to the next characters story. In the end I read half the book before giving up. After finding out the ending of the story from peers the end sounded like it had improved a lot since the beginning. This book is definitely not a favourite and I would not give a strong recommendation to others. The Good:1) Setting- This story was fantastic. It kept true to the original book as far as atmosphere and the moody feeling of the land.2) Atmosphere- I could very much feel the despair and grief that clung to the inhabitants of land.3) World Building- I loved it! Although, I didn't enjoy this book I would love to read other books written by her simply because of this fact.4) Prose: I think that Croggon has a talent for words. Her writing was simply beautiful. The Bad:1) Characters- I wasn't really feeling the tension between the main characters. It felt very forced. Wuthering Heights takes you on this tumultuous ride of torment and passion that crawls deep in your bones and forces you to feel sympathy for Cathy and Heathcliff. Quite frankly, in this version I found myself slightly bored and very annoyed. The Ugly:1) Plot- I understand that this is a retelling. I really, really get that. Croggon works hard to make it original and her additions to the story would be fantastic (on their own). That being said, I felt as if the story was very crammed. Adding a magical element to the plot makes sense, but it took away from the main focus of the story: the twisted love.

What do You think about Land Des Todes (2012)?

It was really slow and honestly I didn't finish it because I grew board.
