While I do not agree with some of Unger's undermining of non-Monroe founding fathers, especially with regard to Madison's term after the British sacking of Washington City, overall this is a good book. I really know much about Monroe, and this book solved that shortcoming. Unger is no economist, nor an accountant, but he is an interesting writer. So while the book has several shortcomings, it's still a decent read. Monroe did a lot of things over a long life, and all phases are covered. The reader is good as well. 4.5 stars. This was an excellent biography on an excellent president. I agree with the other reviewers of the book, the author is clearly a huge Monroe fan and was slightly biased, but I found his style charming. We need a Monroe duplicate to show up and run for office in 2016. I feel so grateful to these founding Fathers for their sacrifices and contribution to the fragile new nation. Many of them, including Monroe, spent their lives in government service and at great financial sacrifice. Some of them made better presidents than others though, and Monroe is right at the top.
What do You think about Last Founding Father (2010)?
A very readable book that does a good job of bringing to life the man and the period.
