Le Secret D'Isabelle (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I was kind of disappointed by this book. The idea behind the plot was good but it was Isabel who ruined it for me. Isabel comes from a family that's all 'well to do' Icy, cold and proper, yet some how she is left alone with a stranger long enough for him to charm, seduce and ruin her. Yeah, I don't think so, not with out getting caught. Then when she discovers that she's pregnant and is thrown out she moves to a village where no one knows her, but instead of pretending to be a widow she says that her 'pride' wouldn't let her do that. Umm... yeah, no. Your alone in the world with almost no support and have a child on the way, you swallow that 'pride' and pretend to be a widow for the sake of your child so that he can have a better life! Idiot! Then finally, her son is kidnapped and missing but no, telling the guy helping you who the child's father is... well thats just too much. Who on earth would want to steal your child? Certainly not your own father, and not the your child's father who you know that your father must have ruined... no, no one comes to mind. Oh- but let's take a break to have tea and sex! So yeah, a LOT of this book just didn't work for me. Most all of my reasons surround Isabel and go beyond what I have listed here. The one maybe saving grace for the book would be the plot. I enjoyed how everything circled back around and these two found themselves connected unknowingly. I'm giving it 3 stars here, but it's really more of a 2.5 star. This book didn't work for me. There were some good things. The writing was good. I was interested because it dealt with some issues that are not traditional in romance - the unmarried heroine has a son. The hero has just found out that he's gotten his mistress pregnant. I thought that could make for a great story. However, I never really liked either of them. The disparity between how the George (and the author) treated the mistress versus Isabelle pissed me off. In fact, most of the women in the book were some combination of selfish, bitchy, snobbish or dumb, with the exception of a select few. In addition, I didn't really buy the love story. Most of the story revolves around trying to find her young son, who has been kidnapped. This is an opportunity to see them working effectively together as partners, but I didn't see that. I don't believe that, as of the end of this book, that either character is ready for a HEA or even a HFN.
