Leaving Lancaster (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

A young woman believes her family is only her mother and herself until a trip into her mother's past reveals a journey into a life with the Amish, complete with a grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins she did not know existed. She deals with anger at her mother for hiding the past from her while getting to know the Amish and Mennonite life and the sacrifices they give to family, life and God. “Leaving Lancaster” is not just about the Amish, but about the relationship between mothers and daughters, about rejection and acceptance, and about starting over. First, the story deals with the relationship between Anna Gingerich and her daughter Esther, who leaves her Amish roots to go to California with Samuel Fisher during their Rumspringa in the 1960's. Many years after Samuel’s death, Esther decides to return to Lancaster County with her daughter, Holly Fisher, to visit her mother, Anna, who is not in the best of health. Now, Esther experiences difficulties with Holly, and the secrets she has kept from Holly. All three women are given a chance to start over again and to come to terms with the choices they have made.I found this to be a very interesting read and so enjoyed the interaction among the three women, and the people who were intertwined in their lives. Since I read the second book first, I feel, now that I have a better understanding of the true dynamics of the relationships of the three main characters. I highly recommend reading this book first before reading any other books in the series. It was a very enjoyable, quick read.
