Legend Of The Highland Dragon (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Actual rating would be 3.5 stars. This book wasn't the worst, wasn't the best. It held my interest for the most part, the chemistry was great between the two leads, LOVED Colin, brother to the hero and one of the secondary characters...he added a lot to the story that was missing in the first half. I felt the cover was misleading as our hero didnt once brandish a kilt or a sword at any part in the story, also the setting was in cramped and crowded London and not the unrurally and fierce Highlands of Scotland. I would've appreciated the author including a rough year estimate at the beginning of the story...it took me quite a lot longer than preferred to figure out the story was taking place in London sometime in the late 1800's....maybe even the early 1900's...as you can see I'm still not sure. The story could've used a lot more suspense and action I thought but overall if one is looking for a sweet romance that isn't to stress and increased heart rate inducing but still has a slight element of mystery and suspense this would be a good read for you. I enjoyed it for its baser elements (I.e. character development, setting, plot flow, writing style) but there are things that would've improved it. Only a couple of minor things kept this from being a 5-star read for me: some fuzziness in the key details of Stephen's dragon embodiment and copy editing in which both long dashes within and without the quotation marks were used in the case of dialogue interrupted by description, then dialogue resumed.Otherwise, this tale of Mina, the intrepid (not foolhardy) woman who wants a better life for herself and works hard to do so through strategy and ethical work, and Stephen, the privileged supernatural being who admires tenacity even when it thwarts him, is a fun mashup of social class comparison, battling mystic powers, gendered expectations, good versus evil, and inescapable entanglements of family obligations. Legend of the Highland Dragon is a lovely lark of a read with I.C.'s trademark enticing rapport between the main characters. It's a strong start for what looks to be a promising series.
