Some fantastically descriptive writing around the wild and bleak Alaskan wilderness - in fact, this was my favourite thing about the book. I struggled at times with the intensity of the complex relationships, and at times found it lurched a bit clumsily from one story to another. Shocking twist when Roy kills himself - all along I had been expecting his Dad to commit suicide to end their "wilderness adventure/nightmare". I viewed this book in sections, I refer to it as having 3 being background, context, clarification. Background was un complicated but during context I was lost - I kept thinking I'd missed a key fact and was flicking back seeking an explanation. At the end of the middle section I thought wtf...... Then reflecting before moving forward thought it was clumsy whilst trying to be clever. The plot twist linking parts 2 and 3 was too loose for me, not very clever.I enjoyed the writing but not the structure. My husband is reading a later book of his caribou island - very similar themes based on the authors personal background but the first chapter I read a lot tighter so I may give that a try.

bleak, terrible ... wonderfully written. not a fun read, but well worth it.
