Let The Old Dreams Die (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Plain disgusting. Don't recommend it. There's nothing horror, no goosebumps or shivers down the spine while reading it... just nausea. To quote one of the stories: "I undid my trousers and took out my sodden sanitary towel. I painted you red. Chest, arms, legs. To finish off I tried to force the towel into your mouth, but it was too tightly closed. I placed it over your eyes instead. Then I left". In case that's not disgusting enough, the woman is "painting" a dead body, after she has just put on make up on him... and he said he doesn't like it. It's hard to rate a book of short stories, since typically there are always some that stand out and some that do not.In this collection, I particularly liked the title story, "Let the Old Dreams Die", a follow-up to Lindqvist's most well-known novel, "Let the Right One In". It's predictable, but it's also tragically human and weirdly heart-warming . . .The follow-up to "Handling the Undead" was possibly my least favorite - felt confused and overwrought to me, much like the novel. Perhaps I was predisposed to dislike it, since I didn't love the novel in the first place, but, like the novel, I found it over-long with characters I didn't really care about, and a sort-of lovely, but over-sentimental ending.I think the imagery in "A Village in the Sky" will stick with me the longest. Who knew a very slightly leaning apartment building could be so creepy. The ending was a bit campy, but that leaning, bowing building will stick with me.Overall, a good collection if you like supernatural horror that explores what it means to be human - to live, love, and die - but also has lots of creepy, icky monsters that don't necessarily make any sense, but still somehow touch some part of your subconscious that fears them.*language, sex, violence

What do You think about Let The Old Dreams Die (2013)?

Collection of short stories that tie up a couple of loose ends from his previous novels. Very good.

A collection of odd stories from the horror genre. Surprising ending to each one...
