Letters To A Young Mormon (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
I approach this review from a unique perspective, as I am not of the Mormon faith, but am a former student of Dr. Miller's. This book could easily be renamed Letters to a Young Christian. In a world where people are often criticized for their beliefs, this book acts as a guide for not only young adults but seasoned adults who still struggle with their faith. There are sections that are strictly directed toward Mormons, such as the chapters titled History and Temples, but even those had a profound connotation that spoke to the Christian in me. Every religious belief started somewhere. That history acts as a building block to our faith. And we all have temples, so to speak. Miller's description of the temple was more than just a building. It was a covenant between God and ourselves. A promise that is stronger than any physical bond a man or woman could make alone. Other chapters such as Prayer and Sex were straight forward and provided concrete standards to live a holy life while connecting with God daily.Overall, I found Dr. Miller's words to be insightful and inspiring. This is a book I would recommend to anyone who is (or has someone in their life) struggling with their faith, Mormon or not. This is a lovely little book--well worth the 9 bucks on Amazon. I HIGHLY recommend it to my LDS friends, though it is applicable to anyone who is thinking about faith. Though it is short and quick to read, you will ponder it for a long time afterwards. While many "intellectual" takes on Mormonism stray from the faith, Miller manages to think deeply about the doctrine while staying true and loyal to it. Each of the "letters" discusses a different gospel principle, negotiating the gray areas that often occur when the gospel is applied to the real, messy world.
