Oh Sherwood Smith, you tease me with the good ones (Once a Princess/Twice a Prince and Posse of Princesses, for example), and then turn out something like this. You are too inconsistent a writer. But this is promising--I really want it to be better; it just needs more work. This book definitely suffers from poor editing, which is very frustrating to us faithful readers (the text says she keeps the cloak--but then later says they have to go get the cloak; in another instance food is piled up, but then the characters have to go check where the food is). I like the idea of this story, but I hate being repeatedly knocked out of it by mistakes. 3.5 Smith's exceptional and characteristic world building make this an enjoyable tale. I liked the heroine. The hero...I just didn't get his appeal. He's condescending and fails to trust Lhind even after she repeatedly saves his life. Over all, he seems like a nice enough guy, and I understand Smith's desire to build a touch of romance based on more than physical appeal, but I didn't find anything in his character particularly compelling.

Good fun, I found it a bit hard to follow in places, but I might have just been distracted.
