Lies My Girlfriend Told Me (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I went into this one a little skeptical. Julie Anne Peters is not afraid of writing books with unhappy endings, but honestly, I just don't want to read them. Thankfully, this is not a depressing book despite the depressing setup. It's a wonderful and very sweet love story that completely sucked me in. I listened to the audiobook version and found myself taking an extra loop during lunch or driving home the long way just so I could hear more of the story. Definitely recommended. Alix is stunned by the sudden death of her girlfriend, Swan. Trying to deal with the grief, she goes through Swan's things. She is shocked to find mysterious texts to Swan from an "LT". Who is LT? Was Swan cheating on her? Alix keeps the phone and tries to figure out a way to tell LT that Swan is gone. When she finally meets LT and the truth comes out they learn that Swan was not who they thought she was. Surprising for an LGBT YA novel, it steered away from the "coming out plot". It focused on Alix and her relationships. I read some of the comments that said Alix didn't have great character development, but I thought just the opposite. (How do people get such opposite reactions?) I didn't really like Alix, but I felt she showed some growth. She learned to see past Swan's manipulations, she reconnected with her family, she moved on...I think that is great growth. A lot of times I get irritated with YA because I feel the characters aren't realistic. The teens are WAY too mature, the adults are all idiots, the drama is out of control crazy, the instalove is insane, etc. This book didn't have any of that. Alix's parents were nice and normal. Alix, in my opinion, reacted like a typical teenager to the hard situations she found herself in. The writing was crisp and flowed smoothly. There weren't any long or boring parts. Excellent novel about first loves, dealing with relationships, parents and hard times.

What do You think about Lies My Girlfriend Told Me (2014)?

Poignant, funny, devastating, warm, and totally on the mark about the teenage brain high on love.

This could've been rated 5 stars but I don't approve the slut shaming in this book so....
