Little Gale Gumbo (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Camille moved her daughters to Little Gale, Maine from New Orleans to escape her abusive husband. What they thought was a stopping point turned into home and 25 years later, The Little Gale Gumbo Cafe has become an island staple. Camille and her landlord Ben Haskell, along with Camille's daughters and Ben's son create a family unit that sticks. When Ben is found unconscious next to the body of Camille's estranged husband, old secrets reemerge and the family has to come together to hope for Ben's survival. This is an interesting story with lots of twists and turns revealed throughout. Although the relationships between Josie, Dalia and Matthew are a little disturbing, the story itself was pretty good. I gave this one three stars, but I think it was really just a tad over two. A Creole family from New Orleans flees an abusive husband/father and ends up on an island off the coast of Maine. The story jumps back and forth between 1970's and 2002. The mother and two girls try to make a life for themselves on Little Gale Island, but had to be on guard for the dad, who liked to show up every time he got out of jail, and try to insert himself into their lives again. I can't pinpoint what I didn't like. It just didn't appeal to me.
