Little Squirrels Can Climb Tall Trees (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
This was a light and fast read. The two main characters meet cute while bonking head at the gym. We meet Joseph, who narrates the story, a gay mam who has recently turned 32 has a high paying job which he's bored with, accepting parents, talkative, highly sexual, and hasn't has a serious relationship. Kyle is very tall, shy, handsome ( but doesn't think so because of low self-esteem), and was raised in a fundamentalist and conservative home in Oklahoma. Kyle is also a doctor who went to Harvard Medical School and is $250,000.00 in debt and because of his strict childhood has never been on an airplane or to a movie theater ( a situation Joseph intends to remedy). The start of the relationship is shaky at best, but once the two men get it together they both learn from each other. Kyle slowly comes out of his shell, and Joseph gets a thrill of discovering those things he took for granted.We meet Kyle's mother ( won't say what happens) and the scenes with her seem a little unrealistic and too fast for what happens. Also, I was truely sick of the saying "awesome man", I mean we get it, Kyle had really low self-esteem and this helps remind him that he's a better man than he thinks. After the 100th time and Joseph explaining to anyone within shouting the story behind "awesome man" it gets tiresome if not trite. Also, Joseph's really long and endless description of every beach in Hawaii, and the horrible and unrealistic Mano vs awesome man and horny man....Enough, said it 's a fast read on a hot summmer's day. I really hate it when I start to read a book and I can't finish it. I know authors put a lot of time, energy, and hard hard work into their writing, so for me not to be able to finish it saddens me, and that their effort was wasted on me.I think there should have been better editing either from the author or from the person that got thier hands on it for final. No novel or novella should have more than 5, maybe 7, and I could still deal with 10 exclamtion points in the whole body of the work, not that many in one sentence!!! Or every other word. Exclamation points are horribly distracting, therefore they should be used sparingly and with caution.They cheapen the story. A good writer can express emotion without having to use ! To me it's lazy. So the exclamation point abuse was the number one deal breaker for me in regards to this story.Since I didn't get very far into the story, the inner hyperactive childish dialogue was a turn off for me as well. OMG! A dick! A penis! Did I say penis! I tried to skip through all that to find the thread of plot, but I couldn't do it. So, I will put this story in a file "to be read" for later. From reading through some comments, I am truly glad that some found this story entertaining, sweet, and funny. That means the author has done something right. All the best to this author in their future writings.
