Look Up, My Soul: The Divine Promise Of Hope (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
There were parts of the book that made me angry, happy, inspired, irritated, touched, and hopeful. I marked 34 passages that particularly struck me. I'm way to lazy to type them all out here. For my own future reference I'll just have to check my book for sticky notes. One of my favorites was: "'the mind is a wonderful thing. It can think up a thousand reasons for doing what the heart is already committed to do.' It is part of human nature to seek to justify ourselves to ourselves through rationalizing that what we want or what we are doing is good." Pg. 218 This is a good book--helpful and insightful. Brings out the neglected virtue of hope, though in some places I think it conflates hope with faith. It gathers a number of accounts of people enduring, facing difficulties, overcoming what seem to be impossible situations, etc. as well as various statements by Church leaders, various passages, etc. This is both it's strength and a small drawback. I hoped for more analysis on the authors part, more unpacking of the concept. But, as I say, this is only a small drawback. The book is well worth the effort.
