Lui è Tornato (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Adolf Hitler inexplicably wakes up in a field in full dress uniform more than 60 years after he committed suicide near the end of World War II. He has no recollection of his suicide, and he has no idea where he is.He walks around modern-day Berlin as German citizens give him pointed glares or grins of approval based on their assumption that he's a comedian. He is quickly discovered and thought to be a thorough method actor, never breaking character for anyone or anything, and no one can deny he looks and acts like the real Hitler. Soon, he gets his own talk show gig and becomes a viral sensation. At its heart, this is a book about media consumption and public perception, but it's framed in a hilarious narrative that sees Hitler give commentary on modern day society. I found myself despising the historical figure even more (as one should) while laughing at his remarks on everything from reality television to this new-fangled thing called the Internet. How does an entire nation become entranced by such a bigoted asshole? This book explores the power of Hitler's charisma and the failure in responsibility of everyone from members of media to the public-at-large to political leaders. In short, it's a tour-de-force and one I couldn't put down. For fellow Americans, this book has not yet been published in the US. I purchased my copy from eBay. interesting but confusing in places. a lot of the jokes were lost in translation in my opinion, or not clear to a non-german/ somebody who hasn't been there. As such the fault partly lies with the reader. The author tried to do too much at once and as such the book fails to live up to its potential on all fronts. By the end of the book I was happy to finish, if only so I could move on to another.

What do You think about Lui è Tornato (2012)?

Ich fand's leider weder gut geschrieben, noch witzig, noch authentisch, noch Satire. Schade.

Oké, maar niet om van achterover te slaan. Pastiche in orde, wat te lang.

Some excellent observational humour. Maybe better in German.
