Mackenzie's Mission (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Reading in Japanese. 熱い闇 Joe MacKenzie (30) became pilot in Nevada. Caroline Evans is one of the laser team of the night wing fighter plane. The plane is in testing stage. Caroline was smart so she graduated young from all of her education. She has no experience with men and is a virgin. She was attracted to Joe from the time she met him. To avoid other men's attention and come-ons towards her, Joe suggested Caroline to act as his girlfriend. They went out and Caroline is already in love with Joe, but she knows he does not open up to herself. While they were getting deeper into their relationship, the plane crashed from unintentional shooting from another fighter plane. The investigation revealed Caroline's access badge was used some nights suspiciously. Caroline was questioned by Joe and others, and she realized that Joe did not trust her. She thought she was a fool, but figured out her coworker Cal was the only one who could set her up and goes to confront him, escaping from the surveillance. Joe happened to see her while going to see her to talk and followed her. She saw Cal and someone else in the office, and she was knocked out. Joe was knocked out unconscious and they woke up being transported in a van hands and legs tied and gagged. Caroline took off her gag and tried to tell Cal that his partner was intending to kill him, which started the bad guys to fight with each other. Joe had a knife in his boot, and they escaped. They survived in a dessert for a day, and finally talked. He explained why he was closed up, and told her his childhood stories he told no one about. He told her that hi loved her. When they started walking back to the base at night, they were found by police.Caroline was cleared of her suspicion and they married.Story was not bad and fast paced, but hotness was rather mild.

Another great story from LH and it even had an epilogue yay! In this Joe was 35 so set around 20 years on from Mackenzie's Mountain. In adulthood Joe is still that mesmerising person that everyone seemed to be slightly in awe of, but then he was known and respected as the best pilot in the country, and advanced through the ranks very quickly and at his extraordinarily young age had made the rank of Colonel. Joe was in charge of the top secret project involving a new all singing all dancing fighter plane. Caroline is one of the civilian people working on the project and sparks instantly flew between them when they first met. There is an element of suspense in this story but the plot and story revolving around it is pretty weak so I wouldn't claim it to be, nor would I rate it as a RS. Remembering that this story was originally printed by Harlequin it very much has the usual Harlequin traits, such as the stereotype virgin, the strong and forceful male who judges her wrongly and suspects her of sabotaging the project. The whole plot wraps up very quickly and in typical style Caroline forgives him for mistrusting her almost immediately and I really wished she hadn't and made him grovel a bit more. This story is what I have become to expect from Ms Howard, a well written and easy to read romance and I enjoyed it very much. I loved that at the end of the story she took us back to Mackenzie mountain and we got to catch up with Wolf, Mary and Joe's brothers and sister. It was great to read that even after 20 years Wolf still treated Mary like she was his whole world and still looked upon her with a mix of love and lust in his eyes. The epilogue leaps us eight and a half months into the future to when the first of the next generation of Mackenzie's is born.

What do You think about Mackenzie's Mission (2000)?

He gorgeous...He's a DOM...An alpha male...He like to control...He had a tortured past he never told anyone even his father...He's a sexiest man alive....He's Colonel Joe MacKenzie.... Half the book I was yawning..but half to ending, it makes me ...well....change my mind about Joe MacKenzie...He's not as good as Wolf of course, who can compares to Wolf anyway? But,he's got a reason to be always in control, and be the best , and that what's Caroline ,the genius, found out when she suddenly, unexpectedly, stumble and fall....for him I don't understand about the flying thing, maybe that what's make me a little bit bored on half the book, but then...the lovemaking scene , the tens when Caroline was interrogated as a prime suspect for a betrayal and sabotage, and when Joe didn't believe her..that was the time I really wanted to slap Joe on the head...and the feeling I felt when Caroline was so disappointed to Joe, it feels like Joe had had betrayed my feeling...sigh... Caroline on the other side, was too soon fall for him , and gave her virginity from the first date...c'mon...you're not that easy, right? But, who can resist Joe MacKenzie's charm anyway.... This one was not as good as the first one ..but it was okay and enjoyable read if you're into the flying thing, which is not my thing....somehow, I love Joe...still...

I'm still reading this so I'll put up an update when I finish.I like it so far, but the writing annoys me as well for some reason.Maybe because I worked in this field in the late 90s. Maybe because the author creates unbelievable characters that are caricatures of stereotypes. So far I want to smack the heroine. LH ham-fistedly sledgehammers you with the fact that the heroine is SO DAMNED SMART. Blah blah blah. The pretentiousness is strong with this one.The hero is too alpha to be real. I'm still reading because I want to know what happens, but really the soapboxing is just damned annoying. As someone who started college at 15, the preconceived notions just make me want to throw the book against the wall. Skimming seems to help my sanity.

This one was slightly better than the first. I get that things were set almost 20 years later than the first book, but I want to know where Joe, the sweet kid, went. Instead we are left with a moody, almost belligerent man, that bares no resemblance to the Joe in book 1.I didn't really care much for Caroline either, she was such an egghead and not in a likeable way. About the only thing I did like about her was that she pushed Joe.With this book I am done with the series, too much I don't like to keep reading.
