Maid-Sama 1 (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

3/5A well drawn, artistically beautiful manga. Amusing, funny, and refreshingly pro-feminist. And no, I am not reading in between lines which aren't there!Characterisation: The main protagonist is Misaki Ayuzawa the fearsome man hater (who really does like men, secretly). Feeling the need to prove herself, she becomes a female hero, vanquishing supposedly stronger men before her. President of the Student council she spends the manga challenging misogynist normative culture. I really fell in love with her (well, as much as a gay chap can swoon for a lady). Perhaps her character was written with wet ham-fisted liberalism in mind, but don't count on it! She also has a hard working alter-ego, as a cafe maid. Her character refreshingly original all the way through; both funny and deeply personal with a solid back story. Takumi Usui the other main character is simply perfect. I mean, where where the men like that when I was in high-school in real life? Aren't we all just looking?!Plot: funny, unexpected, quirky, fantastic. With just enough 'serious' to keep things from getting either stale or predictable. Romance: it isn't rushed, but its there, and in later volumes beings to come to fruition. A problem: I don't appreciate the manga tendency to poke fun at either cross dressing or transgendered peeps. This manga does (kind of) do this. Maybe I'm a prude, but some things shouldn't be ridiculed. Peoples sexuality and orientation falls into that category for me. Just for this irritating tendency to play for the cheap laugh it loses a star. Manga does have its dark side, I just wish it hadn't manifested in this otherwise rather progressive manga serial. Manga rating: 4.5 starsAnime rating: 4.7 starsKaichou Wa Maid-Sama is a very calm, action-less story. It's a well-paced sweet romance, combined with a twist of humor. And, more importantly with manga, its art is gorgeous.Ah, the art! Gorgeous! Amazing! A soothing, semi-realistic style! The character design is a sight to see, and in a book/film expressed in pictures, that's a huge bonus. It's a light, entertaining read, and an even more enjoyable anime to watch. The manga seems to be dragging on a little longer than I'd like, though. Maid Sama! is a story that will bring a delighted smile to your face. I'd definitely recommend this.
