Manualen (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

HR, Inc. recruits orphan and abandoned teenagers and trains them to be elite assassins, posing as nameless, faceless interns, never noticed but gaining responsibility and access until they are trusted enough and close enough to make their hit. John Logan, Kuhn’s hero in this comic, violent thriller, writes a handbook for those still in training to follow. A fun, tongue-in-cheek debut novel. (Rated R for language.) This is a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. An experienced hitman shares his wisdom, and the story of his dangerous last mission, to a new batch of recruits. Punchy, addictive and unpredictable, it's an action-packed novel that follows assassin John Lago posing as an intern in a law firm to try and detect his target. He soon finds himself embroiled in a mission which is far from straight-forward. What I particularly enjoyed about this story is that it is an energetic thriller which combines dark humour, love, tragedy and mystery. It's fast-paced and full of clever twists and turns. All the characters are interesting but the main character John is a particularly well-rounded and unconventional antihero. Obviously, since it's about a hitman, it's a violent novel but the violence isn't overused or gratuitous. Overall, this is an exciting, clever, thrilling read peppered with pop-culture references and snappy dialogue. This is Shane Kuhn's first novel and it shows that he is one to watch.

What do You think about Manualen (2014)?

Action packed, but action books are not really my thing. This was good though.

Different. Strange. Kuhn has promise. Some good humor.
