Me The People: One Man's Selfless Quest To Rewrite The Constitution Of The United States Of America (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Oh, Kevin Bleyer, you're just so smart and clever it hurts me a little bit. You make me laugh and you make me angry about how messed up our political leaders were and will ever be. Reading your book is like walking a tight rope between comedy and horror. Dogma wrote the Constitution and bureaucrats protect it (the piece of paper "it"). I pray that your common sense version of democracy (of the actively voting people, by the reasonable people and for me the people) will come to be. Disclaimer: I have questions about the veracity of all of your historical anecdotes, but I'm one of those dumb Americans who won't bother to look up the original sources. Touché, Bleyer. The author belabored the beginning a bit too much, and it took me until after the first 20 pages to get the rhythm of his humor and the intent of the book, but once those points settled out I loved the book. It's about the writing of the constitution, and the amendments, etc. The authors of the constitution never intended it to be permanent, as they had no road map to writing one, they fully intended to make improvements. And yet, here it is 200+ years later and we're still abiding by it. The humor brings a welcome relief to what could be rather tedious reading. As luck would have it, there was a PBS show on this same subject with actors playing the roles, that I discovered about 3/4 of the way throught the book, and it helped bring "faces" and some aditional facts to the historical story. Nice dovetailing. I believe we should all be much better informed about how and why this country was created. I'd recommend this book as a start.
