The day of Christmas Miracles was over. The nine o’clock closing of Christmas Valley Farm had come and gone with no one showing any sign of leaving. As night had fallen a bonfire had been started by the pond and skating had begun. Now, it was just after midnight. He contemplated what he was feeling: a deep sense of satisfaction. Contentment. It seemed to him the thing that had eluded him all the days of his life—happiness—was unfurling like a flag before a tender wind inside of him. “We made five hundred dollars on hot dogs,” Hanna said, coming out of the workshop, and pulling the door closed behind her. Almost as an afterthought, she locked it. There was a lot of money in there. They stood side by side drinking in the silence, and the loveliness of the trees that had been decorated, still lit up, twinkling against the darkness of the night. She was part of it.
