I like sci-fi romance with lots of action-adventure so this book was right up my alley. The science aspect of the start-up company owned by the heroine was interesting and plausible. The characters were engaging. The focus was on the action-adventure rather than character development (hard to tell if the characters will develop over the series). Anyways, I plan to get the next book in the series. Not bad, not great either. Maybe I have high expectations after Miles Vorkosigan, the Liaden series, and Firefly. The author has a knack of quickly, easily explaining her universe, which I liked; but... I want character, and character development in my books. I shouldn't have to give that up just because I love space opera and romance. I did like the characters but upon reflection they seem a bit too much "stock character" or stereotypical and not developed enough to lift them out of stereotype. The hero, in particular, had potential to be scarred and angsty; and I think Lionsdrake would've been able to delve into that without drowning us in angst. I like the mix of action and romance, for me, it is a nice balance. I plan to check out one or two more in the series and see how I like it.
What do You think about Mercenary Instinct (2000)?
I haven't read much in this genre but love a good action/romance story. This book didn't disappoint.

Sci-fi action/adventure with the fun steamy bits. Very refreshing compared to most romance stories.

Again, I wish they'd let us use fractions of stars. A 3.5, rounded up.

I didn't like the way the story started, so I quit.
