Merry Ex-Mas (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Sheridan, Kendall and Asia are each forced to spend Christmas with their exes. Sheridan has been asked to invite her ex husband Quentin over for Christmas so her son's fiancée can spend the holidays with them and get to know the family as a whole. What stuns Sheridan is that when Quentin arrives, he brings a woman. Sheridan is confused because Quentin left her six years earlier for a man. They manage to get through dinner but not without some bumps. Kendall has been asked to spend Christmas with her father because he's been told he has breast cancer and doesn't have long to live. He would like nothing more than to spend the holiday with Kendall and her sister, Sabrina. The problem Kendall has, is that her husband and her sister were caught in her home in her bed by Kendall a few years earlier. Kendall wants nothing to do with her sister or her ex husband after that betrayal. On top of that Sabrina and Kendall's husband Anthony, get married and Sabrina is pregnant. Sabrina invites Anthony's brother,- whom he has no relationship with, without Anthony's knowledge, which causes a problem as well. It doesn't help that his brother is trying to come on to Kendall. Scandalous!Asia is reluctant to let her daughter Angel spend Christmas with her father Bobby and his wife Caroline. Bobby invites Asia to come as well and it is nothing short of disastrous. Caroline treats Asia like crap, until Asia cannot take it anymore and blows up at Caroline. She decides to leave, but is taken upstairs to her daughter's room to rest and calm down. Bobby comes upstairs to comfort her and let her know he is not trying to take her daughter away from her. Through the bumps and bruises Asia manages to get through Christmas with her ex and his family. To get into the holidays, some people need holiday tunes; foodies look for candy canes and spiced everything; shoppers look for window dressings and colorful shopping bags; readers look for the book to jump into the season, and this is the perfect one. You will be reunited with the women of the "Ex-Files". From the first page on you will laugh aloud with the antics of Sheridan, cry with Kendall and shake your head at Asia. It is refreshing to see the ladies that Pastor Ford bought together still remain friends and continue to lean against each other but most importantly this book touches one of the reasons for the season. We often genuinely believe we have forgiven someone that has wronged us. It is usually easy to do if the interactions with him or her are limited or null but this book delves deeper. It allows us to confront situations at a later date to see if we have truly forgiven and then the opportunity to examine ourselves to ask why it is hard to forgive because forgiving is moving on, right? Sheridan moved on in an ideal direction, Kendall is still stubborn taking baby steps and Asia is well Asia. Albeit kicking and screaming all three ladies choose to make a difference this holiday and the thinly veiled struggles are exposed. If you have read " The Ex Files: A Novel About Four Women and Faith" this is an added treat if you have not you will still be able to follow along. There’s nothing like a book that’s easy and enjoyable to read but one that gives us an opportunity to see our reflection and shows us that we are not alone in our struggles is a book that gets put on the to re-read again list. VCM is such a wonderful storyteller; I truly did not want this story to end
