Midnight Secretary, Vol. 1 (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I initially kept passing it up because I didn't like the artwork (old, dated) but I really wanted to read a josei manga that had vampires in it (but focused on the romance). It was really good - much better than I expected it to be. Once I started, I found it hard to put down. I find the aloof and insensitive guy to be really attractive and was pleasantly surprised that there were decent amounts of character development and hidden depths. Midnight Secretary is one of my favourite manga series, as it combines pretty much everything I love in life -- fantasy, romance and secretarial fashion. It's published in the traditional right-to-left reading order, so be sure to begin reading from the right of the page, not the left! The story centers around Kaya Satozuka, a secretary for the Touma Company who is now assigned to work for the Director, Kyohei Touma. Kaya is the model of professionalism and Kyohei is is a playboy who doesn't think he needs a dowdy secretary getting in his way. However, Kaya proves to be competent to a fault -- even when it comes to selecting gifts for his many lovers and juggling their meetings around his schedule. Kaya is such a good secretary, in fact, that upon the revelation that Director Touma is actually a vampire, she even begins scheduling his feedings.Kaya has a secret of her own though -- behind her prim and proper attire and carefully pulled back hair, she's got a total baby face. She's too adorable to be taken seriously, so she uses glasses and professionalism as disguise and armour to be allowed to do her job. Kyohei has assured her that he only drinks from the blood of beautiful women (and he makes sure they enjoy it very much), but it turns out, Kaya might just qualify to be on the menu.Vampires have gone from horror canon to sexy fantasy staples, and a series like Midnight Secretary shows why it works so well -- vampires can be HOT. And this series takes full advantage of that. (Note: Midnight Secretary falls into the josei demographic, which can roughly be defined as women aged late teens to their forties. If you're not comfortable reading -- and viewing -- sex scenes, this is NOT the series for you)Kyohei is fully aware of his sex appeal (both as a good looking man and a powerful vampire), and though his jerkface playboy act is kind of a turnoff, Ohmi manages to fit in enough redeeming moments for him to be a hero and love interest we can root for in this story.Volume 01 of the series is a great introduction to these characters and the roller coaster ride we're about to take with them. It sets up the dynamic between them perfectly. The entire series is seven volumes long and is available in both paperback and ebook form. I've already preordered all seven volumes of the paperback manga. Admittedly, I haven't read the kindle format of the story yet, but I hope to one day have the collection in my ebook library!
