A respectable debut novel, but I felt as if the book was lacking depth in certain areas. I cannot determine if this result of a new author writing the story or the fact that certain events were being saved for a sequel... Which leads to another point: why must all new fantasy books now have a sequel. What happened to stand-alone stories? But that is a topic for another time...Overall a very easy story to read and follow, I just wished for more. I felt unfulfilled at the end of the story and just not as invested in the female leading character as I have for other heroines in my recent readings. I wanted to give it a 4 star, really i do but i am still unsatisfied how shallow the bond between the characters are. Indeed, it does portray how Kyra seems to care for her 'family' but there was little internal conflict to illustrate this bond. Then the relationship of how her and the two men came to be was a bit surreal. I am sure that with the hardship she was in, it created a kind of connection with them but it seems weak. Was she in love with one guy? Was she then found out that she did not? Her infatuation with the first guy was unclear. I can not make out whether she likes him or wanted to gain his approval or anything.Overall, i still like this book. Not regretting i bought it either. :D
