Midwife Of The Blue Ridge (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
This was a book I picked up because it was recommended by my local library's staff. The content was interesting. There is a lot if herb lore mentioned throughout. The author definitely did some research for this book. I enjoyed it from that perspective. Characters were well fleshed out and the plot was well done. For me, this book was still just ok though. Mannerisms and characterization of the heroine which I suspect was supposed to be plucky and determined came off as brassy to me. She was never a character that I became fond of. Actually, the further I got into the story, the more annoying she became for me. But there's something for everyone out there. I'm sure this book was a very enjoyable read. For someone else. Written by longtime Elmhurst resident, Christine Blevins. Publishers Weekley said "blevins doesnt soft-peddle the brutal realities of women's lot in the colonies, but she gives strong, skilled Maggie pluck and hope." From villages of 18th century Scotland to the new colonies of America Blevins takes readers on an adventure. "Dark Maggie" for her thick black hair, lone survivor of an attack on her village, she was thought to be cursed and unfit for marriage. She is gifted with a quick wit, skilled in medicine & trained as a midwife. Venturing to the colies as an indentured servant she hopes to escape the superstitions of the old country, ehlp women bring new life into the world even in the most primitive and isolated corners of an nsettled land and find a home of her own. She discovers a New World fraught w/new dangers, and having given up her own freedom, she must rely only on her talents for survival.
