Miss Hillary Schools A Scoundrel (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Warning Spoilers.I enjoyed this book but felt like it was an Olympic hurdling event. Once all the players were in place we were off and there was a hurdle to overcome every other chapter or so. Can we trust him? Is he cheating? Has he returned to his former lover? Will her brother accept him? What of the other suitor? And then there's even more! It just got to be a bit much and by the time the HEA rolled around I was almost over the couple. Some of the plot events reminded me of some Amanda Quick plot lines (heroine being kidnapped by destitute suitor). Some reminded me of some Georgette Heyer plot lines (querky older woman helping heroine). For me there were just too many hurdles. I could have done without the almost continuous drama. I think the book would have been a great deal better with some of the hurdle events being removed and the remaining ones improved.Overall a good debut novel. Eh... for all they say not to judge a book by its cover, good jacket copy can lead you to a really good book. I was really intrigued by the description on the back of this book... but unfortunately, it had almost nothing to do with the book inside. There's no mystery or intrigue here-- Lana Hillary is husband-hunting, but finds the rakish Lord Andrew Forest a much more interesting companion. Lord Andrew pursues, and she *certainly* seems interested, and an accomplished flirt. Imagine Lord Andrew's surprise when he discovers-- to late-- that she was a virgin. And this is where the trouble starts... he's already half in love with her, and proposes to her (as much because he wants her, as to save her reputation). She... flees in terror. The rest of the book is the two of them blowing hot and cold over each other, and I was ready to throw the book at the wall when Lana would NOT MAKE UP HER DAMN MIND. I wasn't too keen on the villain, either-- he sort of came from nowhere and felt rather overdone.

This book was a fun romp. How many times can a woman change her mind if the man really loves her?
