Miss New India (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Mukherjee's Miss New India is a story of a young girl and her country both coming of age. It is a dichotomy - old/new, dedication to family/self, tradition/modern. Anjali Bose (Angie) the central character, tries to define her essence without too much compromise, how to combine both tradition and modern desires. All these issues facing both young woman and country. Mukherjee is the supreme mistress of stories focusing on finding a way to blend tradition and modern changes specifically centered around women. Miss New India was good but a bit flat for Mukherjee, seems a drift from her usual writing style. This book wasn't what I had expected. I thought it was boring and confusing and lacked depth and foundation. Everything and everyone seemed thrown together, nothing was believable. Angie's character was dead and nothing she did impressed me or made me like her. She seemed lost and stupid most of the time and lacked substance. I was greatful when the book was nearing its end and could not read fast enough to complete it. One of the worst books I've ever read. A major disappointment. I felt the author tried too hard to prove or inform readers of various hot topics. I found alot to be confusing and was lost in alot of parts, where I had to skim through. A complete waste of time.
