On the plus side, the setting is great, the romance build up was pretty well done and there are lots of cute animals. I liked the main characters, though Creed seemed a little one-dimensional and Sage's insecurity at being tall. She was the more developed of the two characters and I liked her painting details, even though the mistletoe series she is working on sounds a little Kincaid-ish. And despite some (albeit not graphic) sex before commitment, this was oddly conservative. Characters often say slightly sexist or racist things cleverly wrapped a cloak of old-timey traditional values. Characters shopped at Wal-Mart and Hobby Lobby specifically and Christian values are represented. I've never been a huge cowboy romance fan (I never disliked them, just...you know...not something I actively looked for), but that's been changing lately. I'm not usually a fan of whirlwind romance stories either, but I'll make an exception in this case! I loved the chemistry between the two characters and I loved the character growth (particularly in the heroine!). I loved the references to my favourite John Wayne film (McClintock!, highly recommend BTW). I really liked the supporting characters and most of the dialogue. Which brings us to the one tiny little thing that just really bothered me, the bits of the dialogue that I *didn't* like. Overall the author wrote dialogue that flowed well and fit the characters. She didn't get heavy handed with the dialect, but wrote just enough that I could hear it (I've got some Texans in my life, I know how a lot of them sound XD). But then "you are" would come along. Not just you are, that was just the one that I noticed the most. The word would not be contracted in places where it didn't make sense and disrupted the flow of the dialogue. This happened a LOT. It BOTHERED me. It's such a silly little thing to be bothered by, but...*shrug*. It did NOT cost an entire star, more like half of one. It would have been a quarter, but it Just. Kept. HAPPENING. So the rating for this is actually 4.5 stars. Highly Recommend.
