More Fun With Dick And Shane (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
★★★★☆First book of 2015! More fun with Gilli, but serious issues too - Gilli's continuing medical condition, dealing with reconnecting with his mom and her illness, and I don't know about you, but I was pretty sad at the loss of Clarice - she was his buddy in his isolation. And the fact that he glossed over the civil union means that there was a lot more to it than he disclosed and I'm guessing will be covered in book 3 - which, of course, I must read, stat!Gilli brings a lot of his mishaps on himself due to his immaturity but sometimes I think his needs aren't being met and that makes him act out more. Even so, he's always funny although sometimes it's gallow's humor.Onwards to book 3. This book and the previous book have shot straight to my favourites list. Gilli is just as endearing as ever and I found myself laughing hysterically at certain parts of the book. I won't say what they are because you have to experience them for yourself to get the full effect. I have never laughed so much at a book in my life. Shane also proves he has a sense of humour in this book. I am not a Shane hater, I know that puts me in the minority. I truly believe he's what Gilli needs. Among other things I think he makes Gilli feel safe. There's a part of the book where he's in trouble and he turns to Shane first that I feel proves this. Gilli is a complex and very high maintenance character. I feel he needs both Dick and Shane to completely fulfil his needs. Neither on their own would be enough. He craves both tenderness and strength. While he does get both from each man, he'll never get enough tenderness from Shane as that is just the way he is made, but he will get shed loads of strength. Dick however will show some strength but boat loads of tenderness. So together they fulfil Gilli's needs perfectly. As well as being hilarious, this book is also emotional. Gilli is still coming to terms with his epilepsy and trying to fight against it.Which as you can imagine Shane is having none of. LOL. I found myself feeling very emotional reading both these books. The accuracy that the author (or Gilli) portrays the struggles of dealing with epilepsy is spot on. As a person with epilepsy myself I felt that the feelings and emotions expressed were very authentic and real. I have at times felt the same way myself. Also I too hate the words epileptic and fit, episode is much better. Despite this book being very funny and lighthearted in parts, it deals with a very real issue which causes a lot of distress to a lot of people and can turn your life upside down in an instant. The experience of feeling out of control is expressed very well as is the fear. This book deserves recognition for how it portrays epilepsy. There are not many books, films, etc out there that do portray it. So I feel the author deserves congratulations for writing about it in a sensitive way. It certainly stirred up my emotions and made me remember when I went through what Gilli is trying to come to terms with.Anyway enough of the serious stuff. This book is excellent. Funny, emotional, sweet, tender, did I say funny!!! Read it you will definitely not regret it. On to the next in the series.
