More Like Her (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Frannie works as a speech therapist at a posh private school. Her best friends, Jill and Lisa also work there. She hasn't known them long; in fact, Lisa has just started at the school. Frannie has just been dumped by Ryan, who also works at the school, and she's not coping well. One wonders why, as she reveals to her friends that she and Ryan haven't had sex in over a year. Heellooo? What's going on in the head of this supposedly intelligent woman? Reader, Frannie was beginning to irritate me. Big time. Then a tragedy occurs that affects all characters, which triggers a new bout of soul searching and public breast-beating. And the title, More Like Her; more like whom one wonders; to which of these self-obsessed, privileged women should one aspire? I hated this book. No, seriously I loved it! The first part of the book was a little irritating because of the dialogue between Frannie and Jill and their immaturity. And the language was a bit much in my opinion. But by the time you make it to the awful event, and even though you knew it was going to come, you still weren't totally prepared for it as the reader. I really started getting into this book at that point. I didn't really feel anything while reading what happened, but it's the after part that really gets to you. It was heart wrenching. Liza Palmer did a GREAT job at dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It made you feel like you were right there experiencing all the emotions Frannie, Jill, Lisa, Grady, Sam, and little Harry were going through. I went through such an emotional roller coaster at what I deem the second half of this book (after the shooting) that in the end the dialogue between Frannie, Jill, and Lisa didn't bother me so much anymore. I actually cried when this book was over. I mean it's one of those books that you read to get to the ending, but then when you get there you actually mourn that the book is finished. Now THAT's a good book! It took me two nights to read this book, but you can easily finish it in one day. It's not an easy read, though, because of the subject matter. Don't miss out on this book.
