Motor Mouth (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

Alex Barnaby-why would you give a woman character such a masculine name? Anyways, they do more law-breaking than I could ever imagine, including stealing an eighteen-wheeler that they then have to hide inside a warehouse. I did like the spunky & humorous Hispanic ladies, Rosa Florez and fruit vendor Felicia Ibarra, and also the cosmetic-enhanced wife of the murdered man. These characters have more than enough money to do just about anything they want; pretty unrealistic. Lots of lawbreaking and murder with no apparent remorse! This was kind of crossing the line for author Janet Evanovich.Alex Barnaby is a spotter and mechanic for racecar driver Sam Hooker, who she was once romantically involved with. When he comes in second in a race, they suspect that the winner was using illegal technology, so they steal the hauler that has his racecar on it. On board they find a dead rich guy wrapped in saran wrap. They finally discover a microchip that they suspect was used during the race, and the owners are chasing them down. Meanwhile, Hooker's St. Bernard "Beans" and a down-on-his-luck fellow spotter are kidnapped and need to be rescued. Will they escape with their lives and without being charged for the multiple crimes they are committing?

Ok, so maybe the situations are a bit implausible, but I do adore Evanovich's style and crazy characters. Barney (Alex) and NASCAR guy (Sam) are at it again. Barney is a spotter for Sam's team. They're not together because he was doing a sales clerk, but she's still working with him. Another spotter (Gobbles) gets in a tight spot and then, well, in typical Evanovich fashion - everything falls apart. Barney and Sam hijack a car hauler of a competitor, rescue Gobbles, chop up two cars, find something suspicious and possibly illegal and find a dead body which Sam's St. Bernard, Beans, takes a bite. In the process of dumping the truck, Beans gets left behind and the bad guys are on to Barney and Sam. Of course they end up in Miami and Rosa and Felicia make an appearance. When a bad guy kidnaps a person, especially a foreign bad guy, I don't think they just threaten to chop off their fingers. I don't think henchmen get multilple chances to get it right, but to make the story more interesting - these guys do. This book besides being funny has enough suspense to make me worry that something bad is going to happen and someone is going to die. I highly recommend the Alex Barnaby series.

What do You think about Motor Mouth (2006)?

This is my second Evanovich book, the first being Hot Six. And true to form, it has the same wit and charm and zinging one-liners. There is a lot of stuff on NASCAR racing which required a good knowledge of the subject, and which I appreciated up to a point. There are a lot of parallels with Hot Six, that seem to be formulaic.Amusing Dog - in this one it's a St. Bernard, Beans. (Bob the retriever was in Hot Six)Horny Man trying to get into heroines panties - in this one it's Sam Hooker, who endeared me with his breezy, Devil May Care attitude.Going round and round again - in this book, our heros are constantly returning to parking lots of various restaurants and such.Heroine - Alex Baraby, the heroine in this one, seems exactly like Stephanie Plum, no difference I could tell, so that the both of them are just Evanovich herself.Crazy supporting cast - in this one, two notables: Felicia and Rosa, the tough Cuban fruit store ladies. Some of the humor was a bit puerile, like Three Stooges slapstick, notably with the dog. That whole scene about poop was idiotic and not necessary.Still, overall Motor Mouth does entertain.

I listened to the audio book. This started out a smidge slow, but quickly escalated into one of the funniest things I've ever listened to. I'm a long haul trucker, and I listened to this in two shifts. I laughed so often I worried I would wake my husband, and I had tears trying to keep my chuckles quiet. It is wholly unbelievable (view spoiler)[that they get away with it all (hide spoiler)]

I had my hopes up with this series, but .... hmmm .... the second installment didn't really live up to the first one and any of my expectations. It was a good book, great story, great plot, I love Sam Hooker, but it was long and drawn out.Alex Barnaby and NASCAR guy Sam Hooker are back solving a murder or two within the racing community. All very technical and sometimes way beyond my understanding, but not to the point where I was completely lost. I honestly believe if Janet Evanovich would give this series a little bit more thought and time it could turn out really really well - I like the pair! I like the dialogue and I especially like Hooker's witty verbal come-backs. It's a real treat.Obviously I have been comparing the books to the Stephanie Plum series, but just because they are from the same author doesn't necessarily mean that we, as readers, should do that - quite the opposite. And as such, I still believe that this series has potential, soI am a bit disappointed that book three is a graphic novel
