Mr. Darcy Bleibt Zum Frühstück (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I had a hard time reading this book for a while. The main character really made me mad. It just really bothered me that the main character was supposed to be an Austen fan, yet she was looking for a husband that had money. That was never any of the Austen heroine's goals. They were all looking for Love in a husband. Only till the end of the book did somebody correct the main character and tell her she was completely mistaken in her thinking. That is when I began to appreciate the book. But I did find the book pretty funny so that kept me interested. I picked this up because I had a gift card to use, it was on sale, and it seemed like it might be fun. But I really didn't like the main character. She was an idiot the whole time. People do crazy things sometimes, I guess, when their lives fall apart. But this was just ridiculous. There were a number of times I cringed because the parallels to Pride and Prejudice were sporadic and then not subtle at all. I mean, she gets offended because he says she acted in an unladylike manner? Really? Maybe if they'd lamp-shaded it, but no. I finished this book because I kept hoping it would get better. It didn't. A lot of people who have given this book negative reviews bemoan the fact that Jane Austen's good name is even associated with this book. I can agree with that. The main character (and perhaps even the author) missed the whole point of Austen's novels.

Eh. It was compelling in places, slow in others. Could have been a 4 star for me except [SPOILERS] all of the sexual tension and sweet feelings with Griff never lead up to anything. There was not one big climatic scene point to, she kind of throws all of the little pieces together and makes a decision. Kate gets a realistic ending, but if we're gong for realism I can't imagine Griff would have kept going back to her like that... Eh.

Lighthearted, kind of funny, good as a break from the fantasy I've been reading.

A good read for those who find it hard to find love.
