Mr. Monk On The Road (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

One nice thing about reading the Monk mystery novels is that they are written by the people who wrote the television shows, so they not only have a great sense of character and ear for dialogue but they are able to recreate the "feel" of the beloved series. In this tale, narrated by Adian Monk's assistant, Natalie Teeger, the detective takes his agorophic brother, Ambrose, on a road trip. Since Ambrose can't got outside, he stays inside the camper almost the entire time, even when his life is in danger. As Natalie, Ambrose and Adrian journey as far south as Santa Barbara and as far east as the Grand Canyon, they of course encounter many kooky characters and solve more than one murder. Reading this story is just as fun as watching your favorite episode of Monk. I don't really watch the TV series as I don't have cable tv, but I LOVE the books! Those expecting the usual mystery-solving might be a bit disappointed. Not that there are no murders to solve (Duhh.. its Monk!) but Natalie makes sure that he doesn't investigate as the whole trip was supposed to be about his brother, Ambrose.I kinda liked it even if its different form other Monk books. We get to see Ambrose out of his element for a change.. with surprises of surprises, urges from Monk that Ambrose try to enjoy the 'change of scenery'.. if you call being kidnapped by his own brother something to enjoy. The book managed to convey that.. and also managed to show Monk still hasn't lost his touch.. though credit for solving the murder is to be shared with another character from the book.A nice, relaxing book, I must say.. a must for followers of this series =)
