Murder Most Austen (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I thought this book both informative, and fun. I loved that we get to follow Elizabeth Parker on her first trip to England, and to a festival in Bath. I love Jane Austen, and all things Austen, so going through the Jane Austen festival, through her eyes was enjoyable. The murder was well thought out, and her story was sound. I reacted much the same way, as Elizabeth did to most of the characters. I loved her sense of humor, and sharp wit. I also loved her Aunt Winnie. This is not supposed to be a dark murder mystery like Patterson writes...I love regency mysteries..so for me, it was a great, and fast read..... This is the fourth book in which the main character, Elizabeth Parker becomes embroiled in solving murders. The twist in this story, as in the others, is that the author has deftly woven in characters that are “descendants” of various Austen creations, bring them into the present. The fact that Elizabeth (and several of her friends) are constantly dropping quotes from various Austen books makes it all the more delightful. Anyone familiar with Jane Austen will find these books addicting. In this particular story, the references to Northanger Abbey were a treat. Of all of Austen's books, Northanger Abbey, one of my favorites, is frequently neglected. So I found this book particularly satisfying.Ms. Kiely’s familiarity with movies from the thirties and forties, and the skillful way she weaves in memorable lines from them, adds another layer of pleasure. Her main character narrates the story in the style of Bing Crosby / Bob Hope’s Road movies, occasionally addressing herself to the audience.

I love Jane, but find cozy murder mysteries a little dull.
